Christmas came early for Badass this weekend...
Christmas came early for Badass this weekend with some big, big news.
First, we just received word that Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue is now officially a 501c3 charitable organization. We’ve been working hard to secure this designation for a long time and didn’t expect to hear until next spring, so we were pleasantly surprised by this December news! This official IRS status means that all donations made to Badass after December 15, 2013 are tax-deductible charitable donations. So please consider making a tax-deductible donation in our holiday fundraising appeal - we’re more than halfway to our goal!
we got our 501c3 status approved as of Dec 15, 2013! It has been a long, hard road and we are over the moon that the 501c3 finally came though, just in time for Christmas and end of year donations. - See more at: http://www.youcaring.com/other/badass-holiday-fundraiser/110638#sthash.J03KEHNr.dpufSecondly, we were thrilled to be featured in the NY Times Sunday Style section about how we name our dogs and find that sometimes a sexy celebrity name helps a dog get the attention that will lead to his forever home. If you’ve ever wondered who names the Badass dogs, most get their new names from Sara (Badass Founder), Candace (Photographer and Facebook Master) and Hilary (Photographer.) The names serve a practical purpose too - with so many shelter dogs named Buddy and Max and Luna and Stella it would be impossible for us to keep them all straight, so we give them a unique name for our system.
But sometimes, no fancy name is needed. The dog in the photo above was found homeless on the streets of Alabama and taken in by animal control where he was branded as “wild” by the shelter and not given much of a chance. Luckily, Badass committed to rescue him and he went into a foster home down South thanks to the folks at Wannabe Rescued. He was known by his shelter name, “Poco,” and his new foster mom reported that he was far from wild - a real sweet boy who just seemed so grateful to see grass and trees again and play with other dogs. Soon Poco was Brooklyn-bound to find his forever family, arriving one Saturday morning as a snowstorm blew through town. His Badass name was “Lee Pace” after one of the actors in The Hobbit movie. “You can call him anything you want as long as you promise me he’ll get an awesome home,” said his foster mom, “But I have to admit, he’ll always be Poco to me!”
A wonderful couple who had their eye on Lee was there to meet him off transport and they all fell in love. Lee Pace became the first adoption that snowy Saturday. Now he lives a happy, comfortable life in Jersey City, NJ and is taking everything in stride. To honor his story and the wonderful people who helped him on his road to adoption, they chose a new, old name for the dog - Poco. Congratulations Poco and Family! Everyone at Badass is so grateful for all of our adopters and the dedicated Southern volunteers and fosters who make our mission possible.
