What Is A Loose Meat Sandwich?

Maid-Rite’s claim to fame, our history making sandwich is classified as a loose meat sandwich. It sounds simple enough, but we do it right. Understanding what makes a thing great only helps us appreciate it more, so today we’ll talk about this amazingly glorious sandwich style and loose meat sandwiches which will never compare to those at Maid-Rite! At first glance our sandwiches look like a Sloppy Joe that we neglected to put sauce on or a hamburger that couldn’t keep it together, but it’s much better than that.
While some have tried to duplicate our original Maid-Rite sandwich (as seen here and here) the best way to eat this original sandwich is through our amazing establishment. We even offer an at-home kit with the right seasonings and some instructions. However close others may come to duplicating our sandwiches they will never get it 100% and they will miss out on our wonderful atmosphere and service. However, if you’d like to try it out, feel free.
Loose meat sandwiches are sometimes called “tavern sandwiches,” and is a staple food in Iowa. The basic sandwich consists of ground beef with sautéed onions, pickles, ketchup, and mustard on a bun. Carroll Dietz created the first of these tavern sandwiches to be referred to as a “Steamed hamburger,” in 1920 and in 1926, Maid-Rite perfected this idea. While it’s similar to a hamburger, the meat is not compressed into a patty form, it more closely resembles a Sloppy Joe—but without the sloppy (tomato sauce). These amazing delights can be messy, but at least you won’t use twenty napkins to clean your hands and your children won’t end up covered in sauce. A little mess never hurt anyone, but at least with Maid-Rite you only have to worry about condiments like mustard and ketchup, not huge globs of tomato paste.
